Begun in March 1991 out of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce’s  Public Eduction Committee, 30 mentors were placed in seven of the county's public schools. For over 15 years there has been an astonishing outpouring of volunteers who have stepped forward to make a personal commitment to being a positive role model to a young person.

Consistently, the program has continued to grow and over the years it has worked hand-in-hand with the Clarke County School District to provide much-needed additional support to our public school students.  At present, over 750 mentors are working with their mentees, and we always work to increase that strong base.  It is the largest mentoring program in the state and is a model that many, many communities use to form their own programs.
