CLARKE COUNTY MENTOR PROGRAM

Invest in the future. Mentor a child.

The Clarke County Mentor Program is an independent nonprofit agency which began in 1991 as a joint initiative of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce and the Clarke County School District. The Mentor Program matches caring adults with students in the Clarke County School District who would benefit from having a volunteer mentor to help them become successful adults.

A mentor acts as a listener, role model and friend. Children who are mentored have better school attendance, better attitudes toward school, a greater likelihood of completing school and less risky behavior such as substance abuse than non-mentored students.

The Mentor Program trains more than 300 new volunteers each year, and more than 500 mentors visit their "mentees" regularly. Mentors interact with their mentee at school once each week for a meal, school program, game or conversation. The program requires a one-year commitment, but some mentor-mentee pairs have been together for over a decade. Visit scheduling is flexible.

Every Clarke County school has a waiting list of students who would like to have a mentor. Interested volunteers complete an application, background check and one two-hour training session. Trainings are held monthly from August-February, though for groups of twelve or more, CCMP can schedule training for a date, time and place convenient for the group.
